  - O.E. wiр "against, opposite, toward," from PIE *wi- "separation." The basic sense of opposition is retained in compounds such as withhold, withdraw, withstand. But in M.E., the sense shifted to denote association, combination, and union (which had been represented in O.E. by mid), partly by influence of O.N. vidh, and also perhaps by L. cum "with" (as in pugnare cum "fight with"). Often treated as a conjunction by ungrammatical writers and used where and would be correct. Within is O.E. wiрinnan. Without is O.E. wiрutan; used since late M.E. as a conjunction, short for without that. First record of with child "pregnant" is in M.E. With it "cool" is black slang, 1930s. ...
